Data & Analytics Wednesday is an informal, monthly gathering of people in the data and analytics, marketing and optimisation community that happens in cities all around the world. Formerly known as Web Analytics Wednesday Sydney, we've changed to Data & Analytics Wednesday Sydney to reflect our growth since we began in 2013 - and to better represent the diversity of the topics we explore at our meetup.
We meet every second Wednesday of the month to hear talks on what's happening in the data and analytics space, with plenty of time for open discussion and networking. Plus there's free drinks!
Upcoming talksAustralian Carbon Market: analyzing the price of climate action
Taylor Chu, Data & Analytics Wednesday Committee Member; Analytics Business Partner, Organon; Masters student, Macquarie University Carbon markets make it possible for companies to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by purchasing reductions from a third party. The third-party emissions reductions are quantified as Australian Carbon Credit Units. For companies and individuals who need to meet the emissions cap mandated by government or want to voluntarily reduce emissions, these markets make it a lot easier for them to achieve their goal without having to invest internally. The market also helps supply investment to projects that are working to reduce emissions. These markets, both compliance and voluntary ones, have experienced a lot of growth along with a host of governance issues and potential for fraudulent activities. This talk will share an introduction to carbon markets globally and in Australia, as well as an econometric analysis of ACCU returns. Mathematical optimisation within the energy sector Jack Simpson, Director, Endgame Economics Jack highlights the transformative power of mathematical optimisation in planning and operating the electrical grid amidst the sector's rapid transition towards renewable energy sources. Through a practical example, he breaks down the optimisation process into its core components: defining the objective function, variables, and constraints, thereby crafting a model that minimises generation and transmission costs while adhering to system limitations. |
